*Please note:  The complete process, including application, fingerprints and photo,
                         are all completed at the Sheriff's Office.

Monday thru Friday, excluding holidays, weekends and the lunch hour.
Processing hours are:   8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

at the time of processing.

Questions and Answers about obtaining a concealed weapons license

DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT?
No. 
But see above listed times.

WHERE DO I GO FOR PROCESSING?
The Coos County Sheriff’s Office is located in Coquille at the Courthouse, 250 North Baxter.

NEW APPLICANTS:
Bring proof of competency,
if a DD214 it MUST state SMALL FIREARMS or HANDGUN , two pieces of identification (one being a Photo Oregon Driver’s License or ID Card), and the names and addresses of two character references.

Your fingerprints will be taken and a photo will be taken at the Sheriff’s Office at the time of your application.

Upon successfully passing the background check, applicants will receive their license within 45 days via mail at the address on your application. YOUR LICENSE WILL NOT BE FORWARDED.

RENEWAL APPLICANTS:
Prior to expiration, complete renewal application and bring it along with your old permit to the Sheriff’s Office. Pay renewal fee and a new photo will be taken. New permit will then be issued

Residency Requirement
You must be a Coos County resident to apply for a Coos County license. Please bring you Oregon's Driver's license or ID card as proof of current Coos County residency.

Cost of License
New Applicant         $65.00
Renewal License      $50.00
Transfer, Replacement or Change of Address  $15.00

Competency Requirement
You must successfully complete a handgun safety course taught by a qualified instructor
as listed in ORS 166.291 (f)

Veterans with a DD214 indicating handgun, sidearm or pistol qualification my use their DD214

What if I move?
Notify the Sheriff's Office IMMEDIATELY. If you move within Coos County, you will be issued a duplicate license.  If you move out of Coos County, you must transfer your license to the Sheriff's Office of the county you are moving to.

Denial and Revocation
You will receive a certified letter from the Sheriff's Office stating the reasons that your license was denied or revoked.

How long is my license valid?
Your Concealed Handgun License is valid for four years from the date of issue.  However, an arrest or involvement in criminal activity is cause for revocation.

Disqualifications:

Possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, is defined as a person:

          (1)     convicted of a crime punishable by a term exceeding one year

(2)     who is a fugitive from justice

(3)     who is a drug addict (unlawful user of controlled substances)*

(4)     who has been committed to a mental institution

(5)     who is an alien unlawfully in the United States

(6)     who has been dishonorably discharged from the Armed Forces

(7)     who is a citizen who has renounced citizenship

(8)     who is subject to a “qualified” domestic relations restraining order

(9)     who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.

(10) who is required to register as a sex offender in any state 

Other disqualifiers:

(11) Subject who is free on any type of pretrial release.  Specifically, someone who has any charges pending in any court action resulting from arrest or citation.

(12) Has never been convicted of a felony or found guilty by reason of insanity

(13) Has not been convicted of a misdemeanor or found guilty by reason of insanity within four years from the date of application
