The pager went off at 7:55 AM and scared the pajamas off me.  I had forgotten that I was covering the pager for JJ this week.
Whew, will I be glad to return that monstrous thing!  Give me a cell phone any time.

Anyway, after a bunch of phone calls --- why does everybody have three phone numbers today? -- we were able to report to the Sheriff's Office with six members.

A 19 year old male had disappeared during or after a drinking party Saturday night at a house along the Coquille River.
Our assignment was to search the area around the house and along the banks of the river.

The area where the boy was last seen appeared to be the place where old VW busses go to die.
In and around the outbuildings and barns were dozens of abandoned vehicles liberally sprinkled with trash filled VW busses.

While JJ and Chip proved to be especially adept at squeezing into padlocked barns, (Chip, is that a skill picked up in a misspent youth?) Helen and Christy teamed up as VW bus specialists.

Watching Helen and Christy search a VW bus was a lesson in new SAR techniques.  One would gingerly pry open a door while the other prepared a hasty retreat route. Next VW bus, the procedure was reversed.  Perhaps we can persuade the two intrepid searchers to teach their technique at a future training session.

Joe and Bud manned the Command Post as usual.  Beside the now familiar GPS computer tracking, a new date and time stamped log was initiated.  The deputy on scene was impressed and appreciative.  This gives him a hard copy record of the events taking place on a search while freeing him for other duties.

Below is a report from The World newspaper.  Other reports will follow as they become available

Man's body found in river

Coos County Sheriff's Office deputies recovered the body of a 19-year-old Myrtle Point man Thursday morning from the Coquille River.

According to a Sheriff's Office press tape, at approximately 9:20 a.m., while continuing a search and rescue mission that began last Sunday, deputies recovered the body of Daniel Hood.

He had been missing since Saturday and was last seen at an underage drinking party at 54523 Fishtrap Road, police said.

“My understanding is that when (police) did the initial approach on the house a bunch of them scattered,” Sgt . Rod Summers said. “Some went down to the dock to hide. At some point he was down at the dock by himself. When they went back, he was no longer there.”

Hood's body was found in the main fork of the Coquille River, about 250 yards down river from the dock where he was last seen. Summers said that Hood graduated from Myrtle Point High School last year.

The missing person report was filed on Sunday at around 5 p.m. The Sheriff's Office Marine Patrol division was called out to search the Coquille River.

One youth was cited with being a minor in possession, while another was referred to the Coos County Juvenile Department for MIP.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Coos County Sheriffs Office at 756-2020, ext. 371.
