On April 30, 2006, the Coos County Search and Rescue Team conducted a shelter and fire building exercise in the Coos County Forest at Winchester Trails. Fourteen team members attended and built emergency shelters with what they could scavenge in the woods plus what lightweight items they were carrying. They also built small cooking fires from local materials. Each person had to boil a cup of water or keep a fire going for five minutes. The photographic record of their work can be seen by clicking one of the buttons on the left. Because it takes a while to download graphics, they are broken into two sections by alphabetic order. The third button show some surprising skills at building fires. Joe Doman sent out the email shown below to the members.
Ahh, the woods were alive with magic on this
bright last day of April. Mushrooms were sprouting like SAR
shelters.... or was it SAR shelters sprouting like mushrooms.
At any rate, fourteen SAR elves appeared
in the woods and created shelters to house them from the weather. They
built individual fires from tiny twigs but big enough to brew a
hefty cup of tea.
.
They gathered around a communal fire to roast hot dogs and eat pickles. Then, like magic, disappeared in the dusk leaving not a trace of their being there. Thanks to JJ Kellum for making it happen |
